Any one out there got some advice on cooking baked potatoes, in a propane gas oven in an RV (Magic Chef oven)?

It takes more than an hour and a half, any short cuts??

Thanks for any comments.

I'd get an oven thermometer and check the temp. I bake potatoes at 400 degrees. It normally takes less than 1 hour.

Cheat! Nuke them until they are halfway cooked, then bake them the rest of the way.

Whether natural gas, propane or electric oven, matters not a whit whatsoever. This does matter, what size potatoes and baked at what temperature... and are you certain your oven thermostat is functioning properly?

I've never tried it, but I've been told that if you put a metal skewer through the middle, (or an all metal table knife, etc.)it will radiate enough heat to cook from both the outside and inside. This is supposed to reduce the cooking time considerably. I've never tried it, so give it a shot and check doneness often. YMMV.

And either get smaller potatoes or check the oven's temperature.

i've tried it and it works... make sure the metal stake is non-toxic.

yes, it helps. You can buy a gadget her (UK) for the purpose. I imagine coated copper would be best material? If a bit OTT.

When I was a kid, we used large nails for that. The nails were sold by grocery stores for that purpose and wouldn't rust.

A standard ten penny nail would work fine. Just find a carpenter to ask for a nail or stop by a decent lumber yard.

Aluminum "Gutter Spikes" (nails used for fastening rain gutters to eave facia boards) are available at Home Depot, etal., about 60¢/ea, depending on length. Of course I'm not advocating potato nails... they cut cooking time by about only ten minutes, regardless whether one or an entire ovenful... perhaps for the mentally disturbed (compulsive-obssessives, etal.).

M'wave for a few minutes first. Crank up the temperature (350F takes a long time). Cook quartered or sliced potatoes together with meat things instead of all by themselves.
