What are the advantages of the "Y" peeler over the swivel peeler? _ Mike

I think it's so much easier to use (Y peeler). You just put the peeler on the vegetable and drag it down. The swivel peeler, your hand does the work.

Not to be nitpicky, but isn't your hand doing some work in either case?

Well, you don't will it with your mind (laugh). Check out both types and mimic how you'd peel a carrot, maybe you'll see what I mean.

Both are horrible and should be banished in favour of a lanacashire peeler (I have no idea what that would be in the US, basicly a fixed-blade peeler which operates like a peeling knife but mounted in such a way that you can't cut yourself).

It's not a matter of advantages, per se, it's different tools for different tasks.

If I'm peeling carrots and potatoes, then I use the peeler that finishes the task most quickly. If I have to dice butternut squash (which requires peeling it), then I use the "Y" peeler, because butternut's skin is just too tough to deal with effectively with any other peeler. I'm using squash as an example, but generally any tough-skinned vegetable is easier and safer peeled with the "Y" peeler.

It all depends on how well they are made. If they're really sharp, then either kind works fine. Most I've bought have not peeled well (either kind) but now I have a swivel one that works just fine, and I'm keeping it!

Which peeler configuration works best is a personal choice based upon each individual's comfort, obviously each person's physical characteristics and range of motion is different and unique. Personally I much prefer the olde thyme straight swivel peeler, the ones with a carbon steel blade. Regardless which style, veggie peelers with stainless steel blades stink.

What kind of logic is that? Leaving it up to each person to decide effectively kills this thread!

Oh. Then let's invoke the the ol' "Peter Parer" law and enforce it, religiously... everyone with a 3" k'nifeh move to the left... all genitals with 6" pig stickers line up to the right, the rest of ya 'yoose people, move yer 8"er shivs to the back of the spud locker. How's that for stirrin' up a little controversy? hehehehe
