Whats the difference between Au Gratin and Scalloped potatoes? I think they are the same and that Betty Crocker sells boxes with both names to capitalize on customer name recognition.

Scalloped is just white sauce. Au gratin has cheese.

Au Gratin potatoes have cheese, Scalloped potatoes don't. There is a difference (especially if you make them yourself). I too, have tried both varieties of the Betty Crocker potatoes and there doesn't seem to be all that much cheese in the Au Gratin type. I have used the Idaho brand Au Gratin potates before and prefer them to the Betty Crocker. Of course home made beat all of them and they aren't as hard to make as I thought they would be (maybe they take a bit longer to make though).

Good Luck!

Having a good mandolin speeds things up. No. Not the musical instrument. The slicing thing... Oh BTW, watch your fingers!

To scallop: Bake in cream w/o topping

Gratin: Technically, it's "au gratin" (with a crust). It means baking or broiling something that is topped with buttered breadcrumbs. The crumbs will form a crunchy crust on top of the dish to contrast with a softer interior.

No disrespect to Ms. Crocker, but there is no cheese in Scalloped Potatoes. They are in a white sauce and I make mine (like mom) with pork chops.
Yummmmmm!
