What is the best way to bake potatoes in the microwave?

It's best to bake them NOT in the microwave. Baked potatoes and microwave ovens are mutually exclusive. A whole potato cooked in the microwave is merely steamed in its own moisture.

Although it's better done in a real over, a microwave will do when in a hurry. Here's what I do with fairly good results:

Poke a few holes through the potato. Take a couple of paper towels, wet them, then wrap the potato in it. Stick it in the microwave for about 8 minutes. Of course that varies on the size of the potato and the power of your microwave. Also, if you don't have one of those things that turns the food while cooking, make sure you rotate the potato about half way through.

another option to eliminate the "steaming" result from the microwave is to do half of it in the mw, then finish it in the oven. Faster and with a similar result as traditional, oven method.

I scrub the potato then make a cut lengthwise and crosswise and put then on
the oven shelf.

1 potato: 5 or 6 mins
2: 7 or 8 mins
4: 14 or 15 mins

I have a combination oven and cook 4 potatoes on combination high/210 degrees for about 12 mins initially, then a minute at a time until cooked. This gives a lovely crisp skin like the conventional oven does.

If you want steamed potatoes, just nuke them on high for a few minutes.

Baked potatoes can only be cooked one way ... baking them in an oven.

*** 7 minutes on high will do it for me .... just be sure to poke some holes in it....

*** To shorten the process, put the pierced potatoe in the microwave for three minutes, then add a light coating of olive oil, and it only takes another 35 minutes in a 350 (f) degree oven.

Pierce it in several places, to vent the steam. A medium-sized potato in a 1000W oven will take about 6-7 minutes.
